And so, Vincentians share a marvelous vision of the Love of God extended to both the rich and the poor. Vincentians are thankful for the grace of serving the poor and finding the face of Christ, often disguised in so many ways in the faces of those we serve.

The work of a Vincentian priest is rich and varied. The days are full. You may say that the levels of destitution that Vincent encountered on the streets of Paris do not exist in modern Ireland anymore, but the poor are always there if you only look.

What we as Vincentians want to know is who are the Vincentians who established and owned 16 bank accounts at HSBC in Switzerland amounting to US$48.7 million. In the UK, the producers of the BBC programme Panorama may have all the answers at their fingertips.

They may have plenty of this world‟s goods, so that envious fellow-men regard them as rich, but they are poor with the worst of poverty. Others there are, who know these things, and who know that, to reach to the lofty destiny God has in mind for them, they must live lives of obedience to His laws; but this they will not do, simply because the sinful attractions of the world appeal too strongly to them.

According to Bossuet, God had made the rich so they would be servants of the poor. Their wealth had no other raison d’etre than to be shared (Masillon). But, instead of this, the rich considered themselves rich for their own sakes and in this way they became blind (Arnauld), deceitful (Masilion) or idolatrous (Montargon).

In over 90 countries worldwide, more than 190,000 men and women call themselves “Vincentians.” These people are members of the Society of St. Vincent dePaul, one of the largest Catholic lay organizations in the world. Our members believe that being a Vincentian is a vocation—something that we live 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The choice for God involves a choice for humanity. Vincentian spirituality further specifies this latter aspect in a choice for the poor. This can never be a selfrighteous turning of one’ s back on the rich. That would only lead to new forms of oppression.

Brothers and priests take vows and live a community life. Members of the “Vincentian Fathers and Brothers” come together in community (they live a “common life”) to be supported and enriched to serve in various ministries. They call each other “confreres” (which translates as “brothers” or “colleagues”).

It is love that gives freedom and strength, can connect and heal all wounds. That is the love of the Holy Spirit manifested in us, so that weakness in us becomes strong, our poverty becomes rich, our vibrancy becomes steadfast, our cowardice where we become brave … Saint Vincent said: “Charity is what? If not love and gentleness” (SV II, 298).

For St. Vincent, as well as his disciple Bossuet, the Church ought to be, above all, not the Church of kings and rich people but the Church of the poor. In summary: when St. Vincent died in 1660, he left to posterity an experience of faith, a rich and new spiritual way, built up progressively on the bases of the experiences of Folleville and Chatillon.
